A Louisville museum is among the top 10 new attractions of 2021, according to USA Today readers.
Roots 101 African American Museum, located downtown at 124 N. First St., is one of 10 winners of USA Today’s Readers’ Choice Award for Best New Attraction.
The Louisville museum was chosen from a list of 20 competitors compiled by national travel experts.

Roots 101 founder and CEO Lamont Collins said he learned a few months ago that his museum was in the running for the award.
Roots 101 opened in its current 10,000 square foot space in June. The museum had previously operated from a temporary space on Main Street next to the Frazier History Museum in 2019, but that location never fully opened to the public because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The museum showcases African and African American history and artifacts. It also hosts performances, educational programming and community gatherings.
Collins said up to 3,500 people visit Roots 101 each month, and another 53,000 visit its website. The museum has an annual budget of $350,000.
Collins credits folk singer James Taylor for raising Root 101’s national profile. Taylor visited the museum in August when he was in Louisville to perform at the KFC Yum Center with Jackson Browne.
The musician praised Roots 101 several times at his performance.
“What James Taylor did has reached so many people,” Collins said. “I think I’ve gotten more out of town people than local. People have come from as far as Hawaii just to come to Roots 101.”
