Tourists are eager to return to beautiful Switzerland known for it’s 208 mountains, over 7000 pristine lakes, extremely high quality of life, and awe-inspiring views.
Below we have all the information you’ll need for travel to Switzerland in 2021, including which countries can visit, if testing and or quarantines apply to your trip, and everything else you should know before you go.
As of December 1, 2021, vaccinated travelers from most nations can visit Switzerland.
Unvaccinated passengers can only travel to Switzerland if they come from EEA member states or are arriving from low-risk nations.
Here is the list of nations Switzerland considers to be ‘low risk’ separated into two lists, one Schengen and the other EU nations plus third-party nations.
*Visitors from the USA and Canada can still visit Switzerland only if the passenger is fully vaccinated. Recovered and tested Americans are not allowed to enter.
All passengers must fill out the Entry Form before arriving in Switzerland. This includes arrivals by air, land borders, and sea borders, or those in transit. The completed form will generate a QR code that will be shown to border control.
As of December 17, 2021, Switzerland has similar requirements for vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers from low-risk countries.
They will be required to present a negative 72-hour PCR test upon arrival and they must take a second COVID test 4-7 days after entry.
Countries not listed above are considered high-risk.
As of June 28, 2021, fully vaccinated tourists from high-risk nations may be able to enter, but they must show valid proof of vaccination within 12 months. They need to show a negative 72-hour PCR test upon arrival and take an additional PCR test between days 4-7 after entry.
High-risk countries are updated frequently and can be found HERE
Travel Insurance is not mandatory for entry into Switzerland, but due to high costs, all incoming travelers should have medical insurance that also covers COVID-19 for the duration of their trip.
The wearing of a mask is required in all public indoor spaces, transit, and outdoor IF a distance of 1.5 meters cannot be maintained. Children under 12 are exempt from wearing a mask. Mask rules and advice can change suddenly, so the updates can be found HERE.
Starting on September 13, a digital covid vaccine passport has been required in Switzerland to access restaurants, museums, cinemas, and many other tourist and cultural venues. However, foreigners from third-party nations have not been able to apply for this pass, making a visit extremely hard. Now, as of October 11, foreigners will be able to register for the app, providing they have been vaccinated with an approved vaccine.
Transit through Switzerland to another country may be possible. Transit is possible when a passenger is coming from a Schengen nation to another Schengen nation, from a Schengen nation to a third-party nation, and from a low-risk third-party country to another third-party country. However, transits are restricted when the passenger is coming from a third-party country considered to be high-risk, no matter if they are heading to a Schengen nation or another third-party nation.

Hello! I’ve been reading recently that they’ve extended the vaccine is now good for 12 months for entry. The government website has conflicting information, where the extended timeframe is updated in some areas but not others, I’m wondering if you have any more information on that?

Yes, we see the extension for 12 months

As a partner to a Swiss citizen, travel to Switzerland from a high risk country might be possible if partnership can be proven with respective documents. Is this information correct?

Yes we believe that is accurate, but perhaps contact your nearest consulate or border police to get more clarity on what documents and testing/quarantines will apply

Yes, the Swiss government page says there is not enough data at this time and they want to make a cut off of 6 months. I imagine this will quickly be extended

Any chance you could do an article about the “At Home” Antigen tests that we can perhaps use while we are traveling? I am having the hardest time trying to find one to buy and bring with me to the Azores on June 5. And also having a tough time figuring out how to get one there at a lab or a pharmacy, cost, etc. I am bringing a group of 10 people and hope to figure it all out before we leave. Thanks!!
