Philadelphia is a historic city

The history of Philadelphia is as diverse as the city itself. The city experienced a rapid population growth following the American Civil War, thanks to immigration and the Great Migration of blacks and Puerto Ricans from the Caribbean. The growth was largely due to industrial jobs, which created many jobs for immigrants. The Pennsylvania Railroad also hired thousands of Southern workers. In addition, Philadelphia became a center for finance, publishing, and major universities. Despite the rapid growth of the city’s population, the city’s housing stock was deteriorating and many people moved away to the suburbs, causing racial tension.
